To garden is to make whole again what has been shattered: the relationships in which you are both producer and consumer, in which you repeat the bounty of the earth directly, in which you understand fully how something came into being. It may no be significant in scale, but even if it's a windowsill geranium high above a city street, it can be significant in meaning

Why educate?

Here at Richter nursery, we believe that education about plants and their environments, will help you, the customer, make informed decisions about the plants you purchase for your home.

Basic information

Lets's get started with information about what we grow, propagate, and tend to at Richter Nursery

The nursery is located in growing region 6A and as such the outdoor plants, shrubs, herbs and spices we discuss will be specific to this growing region

Indoor plants are not effected by the growing region so you can introduce all of our house plants into your home.

Bringing outdoor plants indoors

Some of our plants can grow outside in containers or in the ground, but need to be moved indoors during the midwest winters, including some herbs, spices, succulents and shrubs. We will offer guidance on when to transition your plants indoors.

Culinary & nutritional gardening

We grow a variety of edible crops to meet our own dietary needs and have learned many valuable lessons along the way. We are happy to share our tips and experiences to help you succeed with your own edible garden.

In addition to gardening outdoors, we cultivate fresh  herbs year round ensuring a steady supply for culinary needs using our aeroponics garden. This innovative method allows us to grow flavorful, nutrient-rich herbs without soil.

Plant names

We will use both popular names for plants and in certain cases the scientific name which includes genus, species and in some cases cultivar.

For example if you purchase one of our catnip plants, it may be labeled as catnip or Nepeta cataria.
